Certification through the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) is a credential beyond state licensure that displays a family physician's commitment to providing the highest quality care to their patients through lifelong learning and professional development efforts. Physicians certified by ABFM must meet requirements set forth by both the American Board of Family Medicine and the American Board of Medical Specialties, including successfully completing family medicine residency training, displaying knowledge of the breadth of family medicine through examination, and lifelong learning through Continuing Medical Education and self-assessment.
